“Time passes between two conjoined points, interweaving within a cataclysmic dance. Space and time, matter and energy, ebb, flow; the dualities of being in constant flux. We can talk of the three-body problem, but what of the two? The state of being and not being, of stasis and antistasis. The essential trait of all of these is that within the flux, we observe the two.”

He looked at me for a moment, in what I had believed to be awe.

"what the fuck are you talking about?”

In that moment, I had realized that I had not considered the degree to which the considerations of dualities truly reach. In the conversation with my confidant, I had assumed that we were two individuals, independent of any dualities, able to observe as one might watch a movie, and thus make objective commentary upon the sets of dualities. Yet, in the conversation, I realized that these dualities were inescapable, and that my friend was truly the opposite of myself—I the rational, he the irrational. Yet I could not blame him, for in his irrationality he must concede the simple truth: I am He, and he is not.

“Anyway, are you able to pick up my shift for next Friday?”

I was taken aback by what he had to say. Had he not considered the importance of this conversation? The magnitude of my thoughts? How essential they were to his life? Of course, he the irrational must necessarily produce irrational speech. This is the role that he exists within the duality, and as such, the information that it contains must also represent the dual rejection of truth. So, I sat for a time, contemplating his role as it relates to my own, when I was stunned to find that he had more to say.

“Johnny?”

My name? I was shocked! I was in the midst of contemplation and he had the gall to say my name? I truly cannot fathom what overcame him.

Finally, I broke the silence with the truth that his mind was so incapable of comprehending.

“I don’t think you are properly considering the dual nature of our reality.”

I was stunned by the fluency and eloquence of my speech. If reincarnation were real (which it ISN’T!) I surely would have been Socrates reborn.

“Yeah sure, duality, whatever. Look man, I gotta get back to work, but I really need to know if you can cover my shift. I have a doctor’s appointment, and if you can’t, I need to ask Jen if she can.”

I scoffed. “It is such a perfect exemplification of exactly what it is I am trying to tell you that you obsess so much over such triviality! Doctor’s appointments! Be serious with me! What I am discussing is the very nature of reality—surely a doctor’s appointment can wait!”

He looked at me. I looked at him. I felt for a moment that he had come to realize the error of his ways, when he suddenly broke my concentration.

“I’ll just ask Jen.”

The fool. I then took another bite of my sandwich as I continued my lunch break. Truly, Target has never seen an employee with such intelligence!
